SO-PESTES

something light to talk about.

as i was going through my old stuff from last semester during the vacation, I encountered the book, "Critical Theory As It Is: In Defense of a Classical Education" my CL 121 professor Sir Carlos Aureus. I scanned through the pages about the sophists. we talked about the sophists and how they can be termed as the travelling “university professors”. these sophists went to Agora to instruct and edify anyone—for a fee. in other words, they ask for donations. The sophists were considered smart.

"Sophós means wise and sophistēs is one who makes a business out of wisdom. They commanded a very high fee." (Aureus, 2005)

I was just thinking, if they are called
sophistēs for being such, and if Socrates were Filipino, he would have called them (pronouncing it with hard) "so-pestes" instead of sophistēs. I also considered the fact that Socrates was a poor mason and carver who taught but charged no fee. He wrote nothing and didnt publish his works.

this is just something that entered my mind.
