Few Questions

RYOICHI OKADA

These are not some philosophical questions, these are simple ones...I just want some things to be cleared, some of the questions are not directly related to the topic.

1) Was Hephaestion also Aristotle's student? I heard he was. but I need a reliable source to prove this one.

2) There are also speculations that Hephaestion is like a brother to Alexander the Great, and they both felt more than a platonic love for each other. When Hephaestion died, did Alexander the Great even really cried one whole day on top of Hepahestion cadaver? Did he really grew depressed during those times and drunk hard enough that caused his death months after?

3) Isn't there something wrong in the teaching methods of the philosophers mentioned? Most of them questioned their teachers, is this just a real proof that they criticize what they learn? Because the "stubbornness" the students showed was handed down from one teacher to his student and so on. What do you think about this?

4) Today, people clearly adapted the idea that men are superior than women from our ancestors or our traditions. In Athens, only a male adult and a citizen of Athens were granted political rights. Being one of the ancient civilizations in history, where did they adapt the idea of male superiority? Did just really based it on the physical strength? (since men are physiologically stronger than women)

5) The metics. How do the Athenian or the Solon, if ever, identify who are the citizens of Athens and who are not. Do they have some census of some sort? Do they just identify Athenians from foreigners just by the appearance?

  2. for number 4. maybe one basis is the physical strength. another might be their observations on the characteristics and actions of women which differs from men. and maybe, from their observations, their instincts tell them that men are better leaders than women

  3. 3 - I think that it is just the nature of a philosopher to question everything - even that taught to them by their teachers.

4 - Actually, the earlier precolonial Philippines is actually matriarchal. There is great respect for the babaylan, a lot of products are attributed to ancestral mothers like Lola Pureza's Peanut Browas of Cebu, Mama Sita's, etc. And the mother is also very respected and influential in the family, as influencial, or more, than the father. It was only with colonization did we get introduced to the Western patriarchal view.

  4. Questioning should be a habit not just of a philosopher but of every intelligent person. Even what the teacher and textbook says ought to be questioned. This is how one learns to think for himself.
