Tyranny according to the dictionary is a government of an absolute ruler. An example I think of tyranny in the Philippines was during the time of Marcos regime. During his time, Philippines actually prospered and gained recognition through various programs and projects of the government. It was also during his regime that the Filipinos united asking for democracy. But what did democracy do to our country?
According to what I’ve understood in our class discussion of Machiavelli’s The Prince and The Discourses on Livy, for a state to have a good government, it must be a republic and must be governed by a tyrant ruler. Our country has a republic form of government and Marcos was a tyrant ruler. I believe that our country really needs a leader like him. Some Filipinos nowadays are becoming more lax. Discipline is absolutely necessary to be prosperous and stable.
I agree with that one. Discipline can only be enforced by someone who is above the system, so to speak. Our democracy has became a soup of too many cooks, resulting in spoilage. Each additional leader/official we have in the government turns out to just be another hole/loop/leak in the system, leading to contradiction and ruin. But the biggest culprit is indeed Filipinos becoming more lax. Everybody knows what his or her rights are, but nobody seems to know what his or her DUTIES are. We only fight for our rights while neglecting our duties. What can we expect if we keep on doing that?
ReplyDeleteI also agree with what you've said, I can't really tell exactly since I'm not from that era, but from what I have heard, only the twilight years of Marcos' regime made his image bad. Yes, the Filipinos become more lax, bad what they felt during those times is that their freedom is once again threatened. We are sort of being more careful after being ruled by the Spanish, American and Japanese. They felt that their freedom is once again threatened. And to avoid the repetition of our past, they had to act, without even seeing both sides of the coin. We can't really blame anyone. :)
