Firecrackers

I would not say that the implementation of the ban on dangerous firecrackers was perfect but it has proved that the government is capable of implementing such rules. The number of reported cases of injuries from firecrackers has lowered this year compared to last year, according to Dr. Eric Tayag of the DOH’s National Epidemiology Center.
The mass media have also contributed in the campaign against the use of fireworks. Hand in hand with the authorities, they have informed the people on how dangerous firecrackers are (as demonstrated by the QCPD ). News reports on television have also become more visual in terms of showing the injuries acquired by the victims (wounds that were terrible enough to upset the stomach). These have served as warnings to the public to discourage them from using firecrackers by instilling fear.
Although the total ban against firecrackers has not been implemented yet, it may be possible for the coming years. This reflects that the Filipinos CAN be disciplined. If the ban on firecrackers could be implemented, other laws, such as traffic rules, could be implemented as well.
Take Davao City as an example. Since 2001, the ban on the use of all kinds of firecrackers and fireworks has been implemented. This has resulted to zero accidents caused by pyrotechnics. In addition, other rules, such as curfew, smoking and traffic rules, have been strictly implemented in the city.
The campaign against firecrackers this year is just a step towards safer New Years to come. Hopefully, there would beless victims, as well as more disciplined and responsible citizens, next year.
